Nimbus 365 Coupe – A real long-stay cruising boat for exploring

By Andy Adams
There is no shortage of fun and exciting new boat designs hitting the market, but for the last few years these have been mainly outboard-powered day boats. Some are day cruisers; some are centre console fishing boats or designed for tow sports. A new live-aboard cabin boat has become a rare item these days.
So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska
I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.
Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:
…you understand now why you came this way.
Hats Off: Legendary Alex Tilley Dies at 87

For the boating community, the Tilley hat was literally a life saver and became a synonym weatherproof hat with a broad all round brim. Alex Tilley struck an important chord with floating, long lasting headwear long before your dermatologist scolded you to ‘wear a proper hat’ on the boat.
The Canadian entrepreneur who invented the Tilley Hat and a line of outdoor and travel clothing died October 28 of heart failure at age 87 in Muskoka, Ontario. Alex Tilley founded Tilley Endurables, which manufactured its products in Canada, sold worldwide, and supplied hats to the Canadian Armed Forces during the Gulf War.

Buyer Aware: Taxes, Duty And Tariffs

By Colin Andrews
The latest news on the tax front is that the Liberal government’s budget, recently passed in Parliament, contains a provision to eliminate the Luxury Tax on boats and airplanes. For context, this saves over $25,000 on a boat worth $300,000 before 13% HST.
One of the more troublesome aspects of the Luxury Tax was that it applied, selectively, to boats built after 2018. The Luxury Tax was a financial failure, generating only about 25% of projected revenue. The more damaging failure is the loss of the HST on boat sales that were never made. The tax disrupted the new and used boat market to an almost fatal degree.

New Garmin OnBoard Wireless Man Overboard detection and engine cutoff system

Garmin, the world’s largest1 and most innovative marine electronics manufacturer, has announced Garmin OnBoard™, a versatile Man Overboard (MOB) and engine cutoff solution for boaters that uses wireless technology instead of traditional tethered cords.
Tags can be worn on a wrist band, carabiner or key ring float, and designated as either captain or passenger. If an MOB is detected, the system will save a waypoint on the chartplotter, and audible alarms will sound. Should the captain fall overboard, the system will also automatically trigger engine cutoff.
