Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) in Long Beach, CA was the venue for the four day 2018 Laser North American Championship July 12 to 15. 160 competitors made for huge fleets in three divisions, Laser Standard, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7.

Laser PodiumIn the daunting 81-boat Laser Radial fleet the dominant first place finisher was Canadian Olympian and National Team member Brenda Bowskill of RCYC, Toronto, taking first in seven of the 12 races. Bowskill sailed for Canada in the 2016 Olympic Games and her exquisite form had opponents noting she was ‘one with her boat.’ Canadian Sarah Douglas (Ashbridge’s Bay YC, Toronto), another Olympic hopeful, took a solid second winning another three races, leaving but two for the world that is not Canada.

Spencer Leman also of RCYC took second in the Laser 4.7 fleet dropping a 4th as his only non-podium finish in a dozen starts.
